Low Complexity Channel Models for Approximating Flat Rayleigh Fading in Network Simulations. (August 2003) Jeffrey Michael McDougall, B.S., Texas A&M University; M.S., Johns Hopkins University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Scott L. Miller The intricate dependency of networking protocols upon the performance of the wireless channel motivates the investigation of network channel approximations for fading channels. Wireless networking protocols are increasingly being designed and evaluated with the assistance of networking simulators. While evaluating networking protocols such as medium access control, routing, and reliable transport, the network channel model, and its associated capacity, will drastically impact the achievable network throughput. Researcher relying upon simulation results must therefore use extreme caution to ensure the use of similar channel models when performing protocol comparisons. Some channel approximations have been created to mimic the behavior of a fading environment, however there exists little to no justification for these channel approximations. This dissertation addresses the need for a computationally efficient fading channel approximation for use in network simulations. A rigorous flat fading channel model was developed for use in accuracy measurements of channel approximations. The

A Blind Hammerstein Diversity Combining Technique for Flat Fading Channels
Diversity combining techniques play an important role in combating the destructive effects of channel fading in wireless communication systems. In this work we present a blind diversity combining technique for Rayleigh flat fading channels based on Hammerstein type filters. We show that the performance of this technique is very close to ideal MRC system which is accepted as an optimum receiver ...
متن کاملBit Error Performance for Asynchronous Ds Cdma Systems Over Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channels (RESEARCH NOTE)
In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of CDMA in mobile communications. Bit error rate is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of CDMA systems. In this paper, we develop a technique to find an accurate approximation to the probability of bit error for asynchronous direct–sequence code division multiple–access (DS/CDMA) systems by modeling the multipl...
متن کاملTrellis turbo-codes in flat Rayleigh fading with diversity
This paper compares the performance of two schemes for joint channel estimation and turbo-decoding of high-rate trellis turbocodes in flat Rayleigh fading, where antenna diversity is available at the receiver. The first method relies on iterative quantized phase estimation, and the second on optimum filtering of pilot and coded symbols. For Doppler rates of practical interest, simulations indic...

متن کاملNovel Semi-blind Channel Estimation Schemes for Rayleigh Flat Fading MIMO Channels
In this paper, we propose two novel semi-blind channel estimation techniques based on QR decomposition for Rayleigh flat fading Multiple Input Multiple output (MIMO) channel using various pilot symbols. In the first technique, the flat-fading MIMO channel matrix H can be decomposed as an upper triangular matrix R and a unitary rotation matrix Q as H = RQ. The matrix R is estimated blindly from ...
